Blog post 4

On October 25^th 2011 I attended the open mic night in the library on the Pemberton campus. When I got into the room I noticed that the mood was already relaxed and that it was a rather low key type of event. By the way the room was set up you could tell that it was going to be a different kind of open mic night that I had not seen before and I have only been to a few.  I liked that it was new and different and had it been posted about or advertised more I think that we could have gotten more people to come. I think it would be a great place for bands or singers to get there voices and their sound out there for the public to hear.

Act one was a singer who had great tone and that it was a great way to start off the evening. Act two was a rap which had a nice rhythm and a good tone. The third act which was a poem had a good tone and a good pace as well. The poet who went forth could have been louder and slowed down so that they could be understood more. The 5^th poem once again had good tone. The final act of the night had a good tone and good pace.  All around I had a good time and will keep it in mind if I would ever like to do something for it.

When it comes to America and our society as a whole today I feel as though we have a quite a few social issues facing us today. I feel as though one big one is violence in general, whether it is in the form of racial, sexual, sexual orientation, and war. I feel as though over the past few years we have seen this come up again, it might have always been around, but in the past few years it had become more known in the news. In terms of why it happens I feel as though it I people’s way of dealing with issues, instead of talking about it they feel as though it’s ok to start getting violent with others.  Racial violence has we have seen has been around for hundreds of years, and I feel as though us as a society were doing good with handling it, up until recently when news stories started coming up about it. With violence due to if you are male or female I feel as though again it has been around for years, I would classify this as people that don’t think that women should get the same rights as men.  Violence due to sexual orientation I feel is a very new thing, as it seems as though it is a new thing to be” out”. War to me is a from of violence on a county, and people are still dying for their country.  

We hear about news stories everyday where a violent crime in form or another is being committed.  While it is hard to pinpoint just one as there are some many in so many different forms of violence, that we hear news stories of everyday. There was a story about a teen who took his own life, due to his roommate posting a video of him and another male making out. My fear for the future is that if we don’t teach kids to talk about their problems, with words instead of actions then the violence won’t stop. My hope is that people will start talking to their children about the different forms of violence, and maybe together we can put a stop to it.

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler says that he will not become the next Hollywood actor to use prescription drugs. The actor has spent the past three weeks in treatment for substance abuse the actor’s rep said.    “Gerard has completed a successful course of treatment and has returned home in good health," the rep said in a statement (via Gossip Cop).The actor who is 42 entered rehab when he was “relying to much on perception drugs, for pain management” according to TMZ. Reportedly, the pain started after his most physically demanding role for the movie 300, and he almost had a near death experience while filming the movie The Men and Mavericks last year.  Butler, who also said that he has had problems with alcohol in his 20’s.  . ". "I used to drink until I couldn't remember anything. I was just mad for it and on a death wish. It was madness. One or two drinks was never enough for me. I was a foot-on-the-floor-all-the-way drinker, so it had to go. I don't miss it Butler said."

It’s people like Gerard Butler, and Demi Lovato who give me hope for the actors in Hollywood today. I feel as though them just saying that they have a problem is a good thing, and them getting the help they need is an even better thing. It’s the people that don’t even realize they have a problem that I worry for, and the fact they have fans that they will let down worries me more. In the future I hope to see  actors and celebrities in general that can come forward like this. I feel like them just saying they have a problem, and accepting it while getting the help they need is the first step to take. The media is one thing that I feels scares them, they are sacred that the media will twist their personal problem, by making it a public one.

How Glee can get it’s ratings back

Back in 2009 when they started Glee looked like a show with a lot of promise as there was nothing else like it on TV. It started off as telling the story of high school students who didn’t think they ft into their social class system at school.  With a cast who could sing it looked like it would be going on for many seasons. The only thing that I really had a problem with in season one was the fact that that one of the characters on the show was pregnant. With this I feel they were trying to make it like a real high school set up, and things like that do happen in high schools.   I also see that they tried to have each character have their own story on the show, back then each one had a different story to tell.  This was a show were athletes and popular kids who didn’t think it was “cool” to join the show choir did.

When you look at it now the show has gone so far from where it started, and the ratings of the show are slipping. Fans like me and others are worried about what will happen to some of the most memorable characters on the show, when they graduate at the end of this season.  This season has been more about individual character’s development, and not the group as a whole. One f the big things I feel that   they have done wrong this season is the fact that two of the characters are going to get married. I do see both sides of this as I myself am a fan of the coupled, but I feel that they are way too young to be thinking about getting married. Fans feel as though Glee as lost its edge and they do have suggestions as to how they can get it back. I feel as though they will have to do something as the show has gotten  picked up for yet another season.

Two of the writers on the show Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have already started another successful show. “American Horror Story” which has nothing to do with Glee, but people watched that as well. The fans like me and others   will keep on watching the show due to the fact they want to see where it goes. I feel as though even though they have no explored the plot development as a group, people keep coming back every week due to the characters.  It was a hugely successful show, and to me it still it but the show has gone so far from what it used to be. People that may used have watched the show every week no longer are, this could most likely be due tot eh fact that  the story lines are now so far fetched.
